Plan, Research, Tickets, Hacks, Find the best options...

When we are about to travel, we are always trying to find the best mix for our journeys, our adventures…

In today’s world, your phone can be as essential as your passport. Whether you’re planning a big trip, searching for hidden gems, finding last-minute flights, or navigating unfamiliar streets — the right travel apps can turn potential stress into smooth, exciting adventures.

After years on the road, I’ve collected a toolkit of reliable apps that have saved me time, money, and plenty of headaches —
from planning and research to tickets, accommodation, local hacks, and on-the-go problem-solving.
Plus! I also added some apps & platforms for “longer spam situations”, suitable for slow traveling, volunteering, saving, basically when you are on the road often and you need a mix of make money, save money, and get a temporary lifestyle based on the bases you choose to stay.

Volunteering Platforms

Travel isn’t just about seeing places — it’s about connecting, contributing, and belonging.

Volunteering platforms like Workaway, TrustedHousesitters , and Worldpackers open doors to experiences that go far beyond typical tourism: from helping on eco-projects and staying with local families, to caring for someone’s home (and pets!) while they travel.

Plus! They are an incredible way to extend your journey, lower travel costs, and immerse yourself in local life —
all while making meaningful connections around the world.

1. Workaway

A global community connecting travelers with hosts who need a hand — from farms, hostels, families, and eco-projects to language exchanges and homestays. In exchange for a few hours of help a day, you can get free accommodation, sometimes meals, or sometimes even a minimum wage payment. It’s definitely a way to get some cultural immersion and unforgettable experiences.

I’ve done about 14 of these, and overall, it has been an amazing experience! It’s my personal favorite.
With over 50,000 opportunities in more than 170 countries worldwide, the possibilities are just mindblowing.

There’s nothing like landing in a new country, opening your phone, and instantly having data — no frantic SIM card hunts, no confusing kiosks, no overpriced roaming. Platforms like Airalo and Holafly have completely changed the game for travelers, letting you stay connected the moment your plane touches down. Whether you’re hopping across borders or slow traveling for months, eSIMs keep your maps, translations, bookings, and spontaneous adventures running smoothly.

I’ve used Airalo around 15 times, all in different countries. Twice as a regional pack that covered 39 countries.

I had an issue only one time, with the connection service, and the Support Team solved it, and it was pretty fast & helpful.
Also! Every Airalo user starts as a Traveler and receives 5% cashback in Airmoney.
Upon advancing to Silver, Gold, and Platinum, you can earn up to 10% cashback.

6. Rome2Rio

Rome2Rio is the all-in-one routing trip planner. You type where you are and where you want to go, and it shows every possible way to get there —
flights, trains, buses, ferries, even rideshares — plus estimated costs and timing.

Rome2Rio routing

It’s quite a handy platform,
depending on the country and region, you can straight away see all the possibilities from point A to point B, while seeing approximate prices, timetable, frequencies, duration of trips, operators, and more.

Still in less structured regions, you can get the connections between points without the same amount of detail. Yet, you get a good glance at the possible connections.

8. FlixBus

Is a budget traveler’s favorite — their bright green buses crisscross Europe (and other regions) at incredibly low prices. Reliable, modern, and surprisingly comfortable, it’s often the cheapest way to jump between cities.

FlixBus

Look for web as: flixbus.com

It is pretty smooth and well-connected, especially throughout Europe. We discovered that on the website version, they show even more connections than within the app.

Places like Turkey, for example they have a type of alliance with local buses; these routes seem not to be integrated in the app, but they do on the website! So if you find yourself in non-mainstream Europe, you want to check bus routes. Make sure to try the web
You might find some extra options, and then you can import your ticket to the App with all the related info :)

Download app: Iphone iOS – Android

Extra comment-
I have used FlixBus almost 100 times (over a 4-5 years spam),
only missed one bus due to a short-notice change.
(The departing time was moved 2.5 hours earlier)-
And I was connecting that day to the departing point.
Yet, the issue was solved within the Help Support team.
(I make my way with an alternative provider, and FlixBus refunds me the surplus over the ticket price.

Overall amazing. Good rate of service.
Good support based on only one contact, over one issue.

-Always check the notifications – updates related to your trip
regardless of the application

14. Google Maps

Might look like a bonus or even an error to put Google Maps on “Food & Dining” section (especially, just before the maps section), the thing is, sometimes in regions where apps aren’t available- you can either listen to the best kind of recommendation – The locals, or to other fellow travelers, but if you have no apps, no platforms, and you couldn’t find a recommendation around. You can look over Google Maps and see rates, recommendations, menus, pictures, and comments from other people… I’ve found some of the best meals through Google Maps. It’s always a nice gem detector ;)

  1. This is a seriously useful list. I especially agree with choosing a few apps that each do one job well, rather than downloading too many tools that overlap. It makes travel planning much simpler.

    • Hey there Lollipop Cheong!
Thank you so much for taking the time to read it and leave a comment! It really means a lot. 😊 I’m trying to build resources that can help people at every stage of their journey—whether they’re looking for practical tips or just a bit of inspiration to get out there! :)

And I couldn’t agree more. Finding a few apps that DO their job really well (instead of having five that all do the same thing) makes things so much simpler and keeps the focus on the adventure itself.

Thanks again, and wishing you many great adventures ahead
